Lobo Cancer Challenge brings people together

The Lobo Cancer Challenge brought people together

KOAT-TV covered the event on Saturday, Sept. 20, when 1,940 participants, hundreds of volunteers, sponsors and supporters turned out together to raise money for ongoing research at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center. Participants challenged themselves with walking, running, climbing stairs and bicycling events. A survivor shares how she sees the Lobo Cancer Challenge as an antidote to the pain, fear and loneliness of cancer. Another man said he wasn't "expecting all this, to be out on the Lobo field ... and everything you see here and the start-finish line. It's cool."

The Patient and Family Support Services Program is one of the funds Challengers may choose for their donations. Support therapists, registered dietitians, a case manager, a resource specialist and others are available to help cancer patients manage after diagnosis. The program helps with things like transportation, lodging, food supplements and medical equipment that cancer patients may need. In this coverage from KOAT-TV, a patient attests to the difference this made for her experience.

CURE Program provides support for training future scientists

The Lobo Cancer Challenge provides training for future scientists

The Training and Education of Cancer Health Professionals is one of the funds Challengers may choose for their donations. This fund includes support for the Continuing Umbrella of Research Experience (CURE) program, which offers students from high school through college the opportunity to work alongside scientists and engage first hand in research. They can explore other avenues and are offered support in navigating next steps in their career. In this coverage from KOAT-TV, a student describes support and guidance for choices in their career path, including UNM seminars and other activities along with UNM Faculty and “near-peer” mentorship.
